Looking at investment clothing in a new way

By on May 4th, 2014

Investment clothing is usually thought of as something that costs a lot of money. Simple as that. In other words, you invested heavily in one article of clothing that you hope to wear for many years. But what if you looked at it in another way? What if your clothes were linked to your weight loss goals and the investment wasn’t so much financial, but rather your own commitment to keeping a healthy weight?

What got me thinking about this topic was a recent YouTube video by a fitness trainer on the topic of motivation. You see, this guy had a good point. He reminded me that the people we surround ourselves with are usually the ones we end up becoming. Consider a few examples:

If your friends are huge fans of the Avs, then you will likely be buying season tickets some day soon.

If your friends are craft beer lovers and travel the state to sample new breweries, then guess what? Yup.

And if your friends are in great shape and love going mountain biking, running, hiking, whatever it may be, then yes, those interests will rub off on you too.

So if you are trying to lose weight for the summer, one of the best things you can do is to surround yourself with people that can help you. But you can go a step farther. You can surround yourself with items that help remind you of your weight loss goals. And your clothes can help you do just that.

Did you lose 15 lbs and your pants no longer fit? That’s great! If your tailor can’t alter them then donate the old threads and invest in a new pair of pants. If you are losing weight at a healthy and most importantly, at a sustainable pace, why hang on to old clothes that no longer fit? Your weight loss has you headed in the opposite direction!

And every time you put on those new pants or button up that shirt you are reminded of your new size. You’re slimmer and healthier and have more energy than ever before. You are also motivated to continue wearing that new article of clothing because you are reminded of your own progress. You remind yourself that yes, you can lose the weight because you have!

So, take a look at not only the clothes in your closet, but the other items that surround you on a daily basis and see if you can find other ways to create those subtle reminders.

Move a lot, eat well and dress sharp this summer!
