What the color of your tie says about you

Bespoke Clothing

Now this blog post falls a little bit into the category of personal branding. You already know that the way you dress can (and will) directly send a message to your customers, your boss and really everyone around you. So just as a pair of baggy shorts in the office will earn you a different level of respect than had you worn a sportcoat and pants, so too will the color of your tie.

But don’t think that this is a complicated subject. In fact, choosing the color is the simplest part – you still have to ensure the tie matches!

If you follow this blog then you’re already a pro. And to boost your style IQ just a little bit more, here are some tips when choosing the color of your tie.

As you can probably guess, red is a powerful color. That’s why so many speakers who put themselves in front of hundreds of people are usually opting for a red neck tie.

For when you need to be the center of attention – go red.

Blue is certainly more of an approachable color than red. And time and time again, the color blue has been empirically shown to project an image of honesty and trust.

When you’re asking someone for money – whether you’re in sales or simply looking to refinance your home – reach for blue.

Purple is a great option for when you want to be a little bold, but not so much as to wear red. And the different shades of purple are non-traditional colors in the workplace. So you’ll be setting yourself apart from the pack and projecting a sense of confidence.

This one’s tricky because if you don’t get it right, it can come off being too distracting. That’s why we recommend toning down your green ties with a vest or choosing a plaid where green isn’t even one of the primary colors.

However, green certainly holds its ground in the springtime when all of us are itching for a little more color in the scenery anyway!

What’s your go-to neck tie color?

By Ryan Wagner

Featured Company, Knotty Tie Co.

At The Bespoke Edge, we are always on the lookout for great new companies. Recently, we stumbled across Knotty Tie Co. – a great small business specializing in custom neck ties. Knotty’s CEO, Jeremy, took a moment to answer some questions…

1.) Jeremy, thanks for taking the time to tell us about Knotty Tie. Let’s begin with an obvious question: how did your custom tie business begin?

[Jeremy] Knotty Tie Co. was born to make neckties meaningful and to give people the ability to participate in the design process. We started doing research on fabric printing, deconstructed our favorite ties, began building templates and prototypes, and finally, after three months of development, hand-made our first tie. When we told others what we were doing, people were blown away by the idea of completely custom ties. So much so, that in March ’13, we decided to see whether people were willing to support what we do. We launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding project, and in 30 days, raised over $23,000 to start building our customizer and begin sourcing high quality tie components. We completed the platform in October ’13 and have since expanded our business to include custom ties for weddings and organizations.

2.) What’s the process like to order a Knotty Tie?

[Jeremy] The process of ordering a tie starts on our website, You can customize your own tie, browse our favorite designs, check out other user created designs, as well as designs from some of Denver’s best local artists. We also have design services if you have an idea but don’t have the graphic design skills to create images. If you don’t see what you are looking for, send us an email to and we can figure out the best way to get it done.

3.) What’s the most creative tie a customer has designed?

[Jeremy] We are inspired every week when we talk to our clients about what they want to create, and more importantly, what it means to them. For this past Father’s Day, we did individual designs for dozens of clients, but one tie in particular struck a cord with all of us here at Knotty. The father created a paper template from the dimensions we sent him, and then had his son, who is autistic, create a design with words that characterize his father. When we finished making the tie and were ready to send it, it was obvious how meaningful the tie would be to the father, and what a great idea it was to include his son in the design process.

4.) Unfortunately, Denver (and Colorado in general) has earned a reputation as being very casually dressed. How is Knotty Tie helping to dress guys up?

One of my favorite quotes is from Yves Saint-Laurent, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” In this more casual world, especially here in Colorado, people don’t wear neckties because they have to, they wear them because they want to…because they know that neckties are an opportunity to express themselves, and they know the value of paying attention to details in their wardrobes and in their lives. Nothing says style more than clothing that fits you physically and also fits your personality, not to mention that it is also made in an ethical fashion; with the utmost care for people and the environment.

5.) Thoughts on the future? Silk ties? Bow ties perhaps?

We started with ties, but aren’t stopping there. Bowties are almost finished prototyping, pocket squares are next, and then we’ll work on creating ties, bowties etc. in kids sizes. We are also focusing on expanding to include silk and wool fabrics to our current fabric selection of certified 100% organic cotton sateen.

My Father’s Cufflinks

My many years in the men’s clothing industry has certainly given me lots of opportunities to “dress up” in distinctive, fashionable outfits.  Learning the details about fashion and then being able to educate others on the importance of dressing well has been rewarding.  In my opinion, attention to detail when developing your wardrobe will always be the key. Of course, the basis of that sophisticated wardrobe from BE is the perfect fit and comfort of your handmade clothing.  But choosing the right accessories to give you that competitive edge is just as important.  When considering men’s jewelry, the old rule of “keep it simple” is still true today.  Besides a watch and ring, there are few articles of jewelry that a man should wear.  However, one acceptable and mostly overlooked piece of jewelry are cufflinks.

I have been wearing cufflinks on and off for years, but recently my interest has sparked again.  Seeing photos from the 1940’s and 50’s of my Father dressed up in double breasted suits and dress hats, I wondered if he had worn cufflinks.  He told me that he had a nice collection and he was happy to give them to me.  So when my wife and I celebrated Christmas with my folks, we all marveled at the great detail and classic designs of his cufflinks that he wore during those early years.  I am looking forward to sharpening up my suit and shirt combinations with these timeless accessories in the coming weeks. After some research I was quite surprised to discover that cufflinks have been a part of a man’s wardrobe since the Middle Ages.  By the 13th Century tailors began using buttons as fasteners and this trend gained popularity during the Renaissance.  Of course, cufflink designs and the materials to create them have certainly changed since my Father began wearing them in the late 40’s. But it is noteworthy that the distinctive detail and craftsmanship of these older cufflinks are still perfect for any man’s wardrobe today!

Contact us with questions about which cufflinks to purchase first or where to get them.  In the coming month we are offering a small collection of  quality cufflinks for purchase, check back soon!
